PREPARING FOR MARRIAGE

The Catholic Community of Saints Peter & Paul Wedding Guidelines

Appropriate music & musicians

Music is an integral part Catholic worship. The selection of appropriate music and musicians will enhance the joyousness and solemnity of your wedding liturgy. Therefore, we ask that you adhere to the following guidelines when considering music for your wedding celebration.

The parish music director, Matthew Still, is the contracted organist for all weddings and will oversee all music planned and all musicians booked for weddings held at Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Church. The parish will provide a cantor to lead the singing at your wedding liturgy and you may request a particular vocalist from our staff of cantors. At your request, additional professional instrumentalists may be booked through the music director. (Instrumentalist fee range: $200.00 – $300.00) Guest singers or instrumentalists (i.e. family members or friends) may be permitted to perform a special selection for the wedding, following a required rehearsal for approval with the music director. Music rehearsals by special request for guest singers or instrumentalists are $100.

All music is to be performed live, on un-amplified instruments appropriate to the liturgy. This may include stringed, brass, or other wind instruments (e.g. violins, trumpets, flutes, or a harp). No pre-recorded music of any kind will be allowed (e.g. backup or accompaniment tapes or CDs). All music selected must be in keeping with the sacred, liturgical nature of the ceremony. Organ music must be selected from the standard classical repertoire of music written for the organ. Vocal texts must be scriptural or Christ-centered. All selections to be performed by guest musicians must be approved by the music director. No secular music, such as selections from movies or Broadway musicals may be performed.

It is important that these standards be upheld so as to avoid any complications before planning music for your wedding. With your consideration of the guidelines above, you will have the utmost cooperation and care of the parish staff, and your wedding liturgy will be performed with the respect and dignity it deserves. Please see the reverse side for a list of approved music for weddings at Ss Peter and Paul Church. It is recommended that you familiarize yourselves with this music before meeting with the music director. Search any of the titles from the list on youtube to hear sample recordings. Selections not on this list may be acceptable, as long as it is sacred music and not secular in nature. Please consult with the music director on other possible choices.
